Detailed Review

Bluehost is reliable and speedy. They’ve suffered from some customer service problems in the past, but have improved quite a bit over the past year. A little pricey with the $30 setup fee.

$7.95 per month + $30 setup fee

Bluehost Review

star star star star

Bluehost was founded in 1996, and is based in Orem, Utah.  They offer pretty good speed and throughput, and they have a “fair” reputation for reliability and decent customer service. But is “fair” really good enough?  I’m not so sure.  Reliability and uptime are paramount these days.

If you look over their website, Bluehost seems to offer just as much as the more popular players in the web hosting game — various script languages, the latest version of cPanel, autoresponder, website builder or wordpress, etc.  And they are obviously striving hard to compete.  Right now they’re offering a free domain name for life (worth about $10/yr.), and prominently featuring a live chat box so you can easily ask questions about their service before you become a client.

Some people seem to feel they are offering a very good deal, and say their service has gotten better over the past year.  But, as of February and March 2010, some people are still complaining about a lack of service with Bluehost.  They are citing technical problems, sudden downtime, a failure to back up servers, and unreasonable account restrictions.

Bluehost charges a $30 account setup fee, and you must pay for at least 3 months of hosting in advance.  They do have a pretty good track record and reputation over the years.  But it seems like they need to focus more on the quality of their service in order to become more competitive.

Thank you for sharing. I’ve lately signed up for Bluehost and since I’m newbie I really don’t know how to use all its features perfectly. Everyday I search on the web and study different reviews and tutorials to get more about my available facilities. So far I’m happy with their services. Especially their help center and support team are perfect. Thank you again for sharing your experience and knowledge.

  4. I’m not hosting my site on bluehost now, but on justhost. I want to change my site to bluehost, but idk how I can contact them to initiate a transfer. Heh looks like I should have started hosting at bluehost in the first place :)

This is an easy fix. At the end of my bluehost review, click on the big red VISIT WEBSITE NOW link. Sign up for hosting. Give them your existing domain name. Once you have your new Bluehost account, they will send you a Welcome Letter with all the info you need.

They give you instructions on how to point the nameservers. Then you go to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, or whoever you are using), to type in the new numbers. Finally, once your site is running okay, you cancel your account with the old hosting provider.

If you have any trouble with the nameserver thing, you can contact your new hosting provider for help, but it’s pretty easy to do on your own.

  9. Thank you for this blog post. I’m currently using BlueHost to host my websites and so far, they seem to be pretty reliable. I’m not sure, though, what other people think about the specifications of the hosting plan they offer, as with some hosts, you may get more.
